Scar Revision

A scar is evidence that the deeper layers of your skin have been damaged. Once a scar forms it is permanent, but can often be made less noticeable by disguising it or minimizing its prominence. Depending on the characteristics and location of the scar, there may be several treatment options.

Dermabrasion and laser resurfacing can be used to make rough or elevated scars less prominent by removing part of the upper layers of skin. The scar will remain, but it will be smoother and less visible, depending on skin color, texture, and the skin surrounding the scar. Wrinkle fillers can also alleviate scar depressions and indentations. If dermabrasion or fillers are insufficient, surgical scar revision may be indicated. This can usually be performed under local anesthesia.

What to Expect After Surgery

Dr. Hamilton frequently sees his patients the day after surgery to answer questions and demonstrate how to care for your wound. The next visit is approximately one week after surgery. There may be some swelling and bruising for 10 days following surgery. Cold compresses will help relieve minor discomfort. As you recover, you may experience some temporary numbness and itching, both of which will diminish as the healing process continues.
